The goal of MLA's Partner Group is
simple: We help successful partners make intelligent choices. If you are a successful partner considering a
change, we'd like to talk to you on a strictly confidential basis about how we
can help.
It is a process whose outcome has enormous consequences for that partner and his or
her family and clients. It is tantamount to "career malpractice" for a partner to
make such a change without getting the best professional advice available.
We believe that Major, Lindsey & Africa is uniquely positioned to provide that advice.
Here's why:
Ø Specialized Expertise: Representing a partner is not
the same as representing an associate or an in-house lawyer. Issues around partnership structure and compensation,
client transition, and fiduciary responsibilities that routinely come up in the
context of representing a partner either don't exist or are significantly less
complex in those other contexts. MLA has
a dedicated Partner Practice Group comprised of 32 consultants who focus on advising
partners. No other legal search firm in
the world dedicates comparable resources to partner representation.
Ø Market Knowledge: You can't make good decisions without good
information. Information that appears on
a website, or that comes from a hiring partner trying to persuade a lateral
partner to join their firm simply is not enough. We provide information - both tangible and
intangible -- accumulated over the course of more than two decades of having
worked with firms and, in many cases, with former partners of those firms. You also can't make good decisions based on
incomplete information. What's going on
in a single office of a firm with 10 or more offices can give a woefully
inaccurate picture of the firm as a whole.
MLA is the only legal search firm that has offices in all of the major
U.S. cities and the two most critical
international destinations for U.S. firms (London and Hong
Kong). The
breadth and depth of our market knowledge ensures that partners we represent
have the best information available when choosing a new law firm.
Ø Track Record: No other legal search
firm can match MLA's track record of success:
Several hundred partners placed
at more than 100 different law firms, from global and national firms to
regional firms and boutiques. Having
already placed lawyers at many of the firms that a new partner candidate might
consider means we're in a position to advise partners about the nuances of the
process, such as how a firm approaches compensation for lateral partners, capital
requirements, client transitions and a host of other critical considerations.
Ø Credibility: The very first thing a law
firm learns about a potential new partner is the recruiter he or she has chosen
as a representative - and those first impressions do matter. The track record established by MLA since its
founding in 1982 gives us unparalleled credibility with our law firm clients
which redounds to the benefit of the partners we represent. Our clients have told us this both directly
and indirectly through the media: In the
only two surveys ever conducted of legal recruiting firms, MLA was the
top-rated firm on both occasions, with The
American Lawyer describing us as "in a league apart" from our competitors
and WorldLaw Business, in a survey of
the law firms of the AmLaw 100, rating us "the best in the U.S."
